IB Primary Years Programme – PYP

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an internationally recognized curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12. Launched in 1997, the PYP focuses on the holistic development of the child—intellectual, social, emotional, and physical. Through inquiry-based learning and real-world connections, the program nurtures curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning, preparing students to become active, compassionate, and responsible global citizens.

The PYP is offered to students from preschool through Grade 5, welcoming learners of diverse backgrounds and abilities. The program supports inclusive education and values student voice, choice, and ownership of learning. Admission follows RHHS guidelines appropriate to each age level and developmental stage.

The PYP curriculum is transdisciplinary, meaning learning is organized around six globally significant themes rather than isolated subjects:

  • Who We Are

  • Where We Are in Place and Time

  • How We Express Ourselves

  • How the World Works

  • How We Organize Ourselves

  • Sharing the Planet

These themes are explored through Units of Inquiry, which integrate subject areas such as language, mathematics, science, social studies, arts, and physical, social, and personal education. Together, these units form the school’s Program of Inquiry, ensuring coherence and progression across grade levels.

Technology in the PYP supports inquiry, creativity, and collaboration. Students use age-appropriate digital tools to research, document learning, communicate ideas, and reflect on their understanding. Digital literacy is developed responsibly, empowering students to use technology as a tool for learning rather than as an end in itself.

Assessment in the PYP is viewed as an integral part of the learning process and is designed to support growth and reflection.

  • Formative Assessment: Ongoing assessments that provide feedback and guide instruction.

  • Summative Assessment: End-of-unit assessments that allow students to demonstrate understanding.

  • Self-Assessment & Reflection: Students actively reflect on their learning to develop independence and a growth mindset.

Assessment focuses on understanding, skills, and application rather than memorization.

The PYP culminates in the PYP Exhibition, a significant, student-led inquiry project completed in the final year of the program. During the Exhibition, students collaboratively explore a real-world issue, applying the knowledge, skills, and attributes developed throughout the PYP. This experience prepares students academically and socially for the next stage of their educational journey.

The PYP is part of the International Baccalaureate continuum of education and is delivered by authorized IB World Schools. The program aligns with IB standards and practices, emphasizing international-mindedness, inquiry-based learning, and continuous school improvement. RHHS is committed to upholding the values and principles of the IB to ensure high-quality primary education.
